This disc derives from a Radio 3 broadcast of a recital given by soprano Margaret Price and pianist Geoffrey Parsons at the Wigmore Hall in December 1987. Price's voice was considered among the most remarkable in the world at the time, and the beauty of most of the tracks leaves you open-mouthed with amazement.
The disc also refutes the accusation that Price could be interpretatively cool, though her selection from Mahler's Des Knaben Wunderhorn doesn't always reach the requisite outer limits of irony or despair. It's also not clear from her singing alone why the audience finds her performance of Schubert's Liebhaber in Allen Gestalten so amusing. She's gloriously impetuous in Strauss, however, and the Schubert group contains performances of Du Bist die Ruh and Der König in Thule that will probably have you in tears.
