Orishas

Orishas are rap fans from Cuba who now (mostly) live in Paris, and have set out to bring together two favourite and utterly different styles, hip-hop and classic Cuban dance songs, thus providing the missing link between Public Enemy and Benny More.

They have succeeded, in some style, because not only are they fine, slick, rapid-fire rappers, who have no problem rhyming in Spanish, but they are also excellent singers, steeped in Cuban musical history, who would not sound out of place appearing alongside the veterans of the Buena Vista Social Club (some of whose players appeared on their first album).

Their second album highlights their range. There is a bleak edge to many of the songs, which deal with the rise of the far right in Europe, or (in Desaparecidos) the victims of the secret police in Latin America, but there are also cheerful, upbeat dance songs such as Ninos, in which the keyboards are joined by flute and brass.
