Sonique: Born to Be Free

Sonique

The archetypal summertime hit, Sonique's Ibiza-lite It Feels So Good reached number one in June 2000 and hung around the chart for a now-unimaginable 17 weeks. But who still remembers that she won a Brit for best female artist in 2001?

Generation Kylie's attention span is such that Sonique is in effect starting from square one. So, for her second album, she has wheeled in big songwriting guns such as Rob Davis and Rick Nowels, who between them turn her into Des'Ree Ellis-Dynamite.

Though these clattery dance tracks initially sound like a self-consciously modern amalgam of house, garage and R&B, there is more substance than you would expect. Her deep voice imparts weight even to sunshine'n' sangria numbers like Can't Make Up My Mind, and the triumph-over-adversity lyrics plainly draw on personal experience.

There is enough going on, in fact, that she needn't have bothered with the topless sleeve photo - unless it was purely to show off her collection of "body art".
