Bap Kennedy, The Big Picture

The Big Picture

Bap Kennedy used to front Energy Orchard, and then, with a bit of help from Steve Earle, he discovered the symbiotic qualities of Irish folk music and country. His latest solo album continues in the same yee-har-begorrah vein, lassoing lumps of country and rock'n'roll and fencing them in with slabs of Celtic traditional music. The results are always pleasant, always bland and usually lethargic.

Perhaps sensing a drift towards the middle of the road, Kennedy has tarted the disc up with some celebrity guests. Shane MacGowan submits to familiar stereotyping by singing on The Mighty Ocean Alcohol (surprisingly, he manages to render a few of the words comprehensible), while Neal Cassady's widow, Carolyn, reads from her book Off the Road in Moriarty's Blues. Fairly pointless, frankly, though not as fatuous as the ode to dead rock stars, Rock and Roll Heaven.
