Simon and Garfunkel, Old Friends: Live on Stage

(Columbia)

Despite only recording together for a few short years, Simon and Garfunkel have managed to sell over 40 million albums, win five Grammies and acquire a mythical status that is at least party rooted in misty-eyed late-1960s nostalgia. The film of their recent comeback tour is a spine-tingling reminder that their songs and voices were worthy of all that success, even if their talents as showmen were always rather questionable.

Simon in particular looks like he's got a poker shoved up his posterior for much of the gig, but Art is as cardigan-cosy as ever, and his voice still sounds heavenly. The supporting band add lustre to the old arrangements, although most of them have very bad hair and play too many solos. There is no commentary track or bonus interview, but the 19 minutes of rare 1970s TV footage provides a bit of welcome back story.
