Jenny Lewis, Rabbit Fur Coat

Rabbit Fur Coat

Rilo Kiley singer Jenny Lewis hails from the scene around Saddle Creek - Conor Oberst's label. Her solo debut is a not-quite-alt.country record, made with (white) gospel singers and identical twins Chandra and Leigh Watson. This suggests a rather more southern gothic approach to genre than Rabbit Fur Coat delivers. It's playing games with genre, offering sly reversals and a captivating emotional acuity, but the playing and production - courtesy of a gaggle of indie luminaries - is pretty, but neither edgy enough to grip nor a glossy enough vehicle for the songs' elegant subversions to hit home. A cover of the Travelling Wilburys' cringeworthy Handle With Care, Oberst's backing vocals notwithstanding, feels jokily ironic, too; a cheap shot.

It's hard to see why Lewis would need to bother with other people's songs when she can write something as good as Born Secular, a luscious, self-explanatory anti-gospel swoon.
