New Order with a Norwegian accent: Lorraine Photograph: PR

Bergen is thousands of miles from Salford, but the Norwegian town's latest export, Lorraine, bears a striking resemblance to New Order. The obvious suspicion is that they've spent hours poring over copies of Blue Monday; they even share a sleeve designer in Peter Saville.

The band's debut single, I Feel It, due in April, is probably the best ever New Order single not by New Order. Another song, Tell Me Where You Wanna Go, effortlessly conjures up A-list Pet Shop Boys. They won't win awards for originality: they have painstakingly adopted the black shirts, black ties look of Joy Division and Kraftwerk. However, they add something, principally because this sort of head-rushing, symphonic existential drama does not usually arrive with a Norwegian accent.

In a dingy club, similar to the ones New Order (then called Warsaw) began life in, the Bergen trio demonstrate an embarrassment of symphonic, electronic anthems that transcend surroundings and influences. She Lives in Gardens is as melodramatic as Transatlantic Flight is euphoric.

There is something endearingly ridiculous about them, not least Ole Gunnar Gundersun's New Order-ly brilliantly daft lyrics ("She asked for a light. I asked, 'Are you all right?'") and goofy physical contortions.

However, the way the songs twitch at the feet while conjuring up imaginary scenarios in the head suggest they will appeal enormously to both beer monsters and students of high art. They should be especially popular in Salford, where New Order might see the Norwegians' emergence as another good reason to take a few months off.
