Based around the rousing flamenco guitar work of Ramon Gimenez and the thoughtful vocals of Marina "la Canillas" Abad, Ojos De Brujo are one of the leading exponents of the new, globally influenced Spanish pop movement.
They start off with a furious flurry of beats, Latin brass and funk bass lines, before easing into a slick, classy album in which flamenco is matched against anything from hip-hop to the jazz-tinged piano work of Cuba's Roberto Carcasses or the Indian influences of Nitin Sawhney, who is joined on the breathy, rapid-fire Feedback by the rapid-fire vocals of Satyajit Talwalkar.
It's a busy, clever fusion, with some impressive performances, but there are times when so much is going on that the songs get lost in the process. It's the flamenco that makes the band special, and they are at their best when they play to their strengths.
