DAM, Ihda (Dedication)

Palestinian hip hop three-piece address the big issues.

DAM is an acronym for Da Arabic MCs but also means 'immortal' in Arabic and 'blood' in Hebrew. It's the moniker for this three-piece Palestinian hip hop collective who hail from the slums of Lod, 20km from Jerusalem. This is their first international release and it's a mixed bag, attempting to tackle such thorny subjects as terrorism, drugs, and - most radically - women's rights. It works best when traditional Arabic strings and percussion, mournful female vocals, and funky breaks help punch home the message.
