Animal Collective and Danny Perez: Oddsac

Animal Collective retreat from the mainstream with this wilfully experimental 'visual album' collaboration, writes Ally Carnwath

Fans of 2009's Merriweather Post Pavilion, on which Animal Collective reined in their more outré tendencies in favour of gleaming hooks, are in for a shock. Among the more conventional moments of this "visual album" – filmed by artist Perez and scored by the band – is footage of a man dressed like a tapeworm throwing around cake ingredients. Acid-fried high jinks abound, but at a trim 53 minutes, Perez's Lynch-indebted visuals don't quite wear thin. And if you've sufficient patience with the murky electronics and distorted shrieks, a handful of lysergic pop tunes bubble up from the goo.
