Rose Elinor Dougall: Without Why

Once a teenager in perky girl trio the Pipettes – those peddlers of retro-pop and kitsch dance routines who were rarely seen out of matching polka-dot dresses – Rose Elinor Dougall has now put away childish things to forge a solo career which, going by this sophisticated debut album, looks rosy. Thankfully, she hasn't left behind her pop sensibilities. There may be fewer opportunities to "Pull Shapes" (as the Pipettes' hit single urged) on this leisurely unfurling record, but it's studded with delights, saving its best for last with the melancholy sweetness of closer "May Holiday".
