Sky Larkin: Kaleide

Sky Larkin offer a second helping of intelligent guitar-pop that doesn't quite take flight, says Katie Toms

This second album from the Leeds three-piece forms a seamless continuation of their debut, where intelligent guitar-pop in the vein of Bloc Party meets 90s-era Sleater-Kinney. It's hard to fault the excellent component parts here, but somehow we end up with an undistinguished set of songs in need of igniting. "Smarts" hints at the unhinged edge the band could achieve, but as Katie Harkin sings: "Oh, how it smarts summoning the sum of our parts/Oh, how it stings banging heads together to make something out of nothing." Unfortunately, this time round it's all pain and no gain.
