Cedar Walton: Cedar Chest

Dave Gelly enjoys an album of jazz pianist Cedar Walton's best compositions

Among the most valued pianists on today's US jazz scene, Cedar Walton also composes the kind of themes which other musicians love to play. Some of the most memorable numbers in the Jazz Messengers' book were his work. This is a compilation album that really makes sense – 10 of his best and most characteristic pieces, played by an impressive and ever-changing cast, including Larry Coryell, Mike LeDonne, Vincent Herring, Jeremy Pelt, Mark Murphy and, of course, Walton himself. Particularly impressive is "Cedar's Blues", featuring the typically laconic, concise tenor saxophone of the late David "Fathead" Newman.
