Fay Claassen: Sing – Review

Fay Claassen offers a masterclass in jaz singing, writes Dave Gelly

The most technically flawless jazz singer is not necessarily the best, but Holland's Fay Claassen's virtuosity comes with a kind of built-in euphoria that demolishes resistance. Her accuracy of pitch and timing are phenomenal, she swings to perfection and never resorts to mannerisms. Here, she is accompanied by the WDR radio big band, of Cologne, one of the world's best, containing the pick of Europe's jazz soloists. On three tracks, she has the station's symphony orchestra, just for a change. Michael Abene's arrangements are a joy throughout.
