Rough Trade Shops: Synth Wave 10: Various artists – review

A goth-influenced synth compilation contrasts gloomy seriousness with very silly lyrics, says Gareth Grundy

This might be a round-up of the very latest in electronic pop but rather than mining the usual 80s cliches it plunders another of the decade's subcultures: goth. Generalised gloom and the cold chill of synthesisers are the dominant mood among the better contributions, inevitably from artists already on the up such as Fever Ray and Crystal Castles. There's a problem, though: such seriousness can quickly get very silly indeed, so by the time Cosmetics' "Black Leather Gloves" celebrates the joys of fetish gear by rhyming "perfection" with "skin protection" it's hard not to giggle.
