Miles Kane: Colour of the Trap – review

Despite enlisting the help of Noel Gallagher and Clémence Poésy, Miles Kane's solo effort is pleasant but not the great rock'n'roll record, says Hermoine Hoby

Despite his youth, Kane is something of an old-timer in musical terms. His last and most famous project was the Last Shadow Puppets, so it's disappointing that this, his first solo record, lacks that band's kick. He's enlisted some impressive contributors: Noel Gallagher offers falsetto harmonies on the breezy "My Fantasy" and there's a very breathy Clémence Poésy on "Happenstance". Occasionally, as with the gutsy psychedelia of "Kingcrawler" (co-written with Gruff Rhys), things really ignite. For the most part, though, Kane's 60s-indebted sounds are head-noddingly pleasant, rather than the great rock'n'roll he was aiming for.
