Alexander Stewart: All or Nothing at All – review

A jazz take on Blondie's 'Call Me' is among the highlights of this debut by a promising youngster, writes Dave Gelly

If this debut album is anything to go by, Alexander Stewart is a singer to listen out for. Sounding astonishingly mature for his 23 years, he can take an unlikely song, such as Blondie's "Call Me", and make a convincing jazz performance out of it. He can also refurbish a well-worn standard without reducing it to rubble in the process. And he makes it all sound easy. Add to this a canny choice of players for the accompanying band (Nathaniel Facey, Gary Crosby, Freddie Gavita) and some tasty orchestrations by Frank Griffith and you have a pretty auspicious beginning.
