Harry Allen: Rhythm on the River – review

Harry Allen and friends come over all fluvial in another exemplary themed disc, writes Dave Gelly

Harry Allen seems to have struck up the perfect partnership with this label: they dream up a theme together and have fun assembling a collection of tunes to fit it. As a result we get one of the finest swing tenor saxophonists alive playing material that is fresh to both him and us. These 13 "river" numbers stretch from "Swanee River" to "Cry Me a River", with many revelations and rarities along the way. With the phenomenal Rossano Sportiello on piano and cornettist Warren Vaché guesting on four tracks, this set is a model of how to present mainstream jazz while also refreshing the repertoire.
