Various: Fabriclive 59: Four Tet – review

Kieran Hebden links dance music's present and past on this urbane compilation, writes Kitty Empire

It seems a very long time ago that Four Tet's name was linked with folktronica. This sophisticated Fabriclive mix casts remixer, collaborator and electronic auteur Kieran Hebden as a kind of archivist. Before the current UK pop-grime-rave hegemony, there was garage, and a variant called two-step. Here, Hebden peels back the layers of bass music to revisit ancient history, vestigial tracks and roads less travelled. Radically different eras – the 70s, with David Borden, and the 00s with Burial – somehow come together thanks to the constant tisk-tisk of the beat, and Hebden's ear, finding illuminating parallels and contrasts.
