The Rough Guide to the Best Music You’ve Never Heard – review

Neil Spencer travels around in the world in 30 tracks and likes what he hears

Dodgy compilations are the bane of world music, whereas the best can be sublime. This compendium from the redoubtable Rough Guides doesn't have the chutzpah of the late Charlie Gillett's annual collections, but at £1.99 its 30 tracks are jaw-droppingly good value. It's download only, but you have to buy the cover in a record store to get your code – a marketing trick of the future, one suspects. The music is segued sweetly, mixing evergreen names such as Cuba's Sierra Maestra with newcomers such as Brazilian avant-gardists Axial and Parisian boulevardiers Beltune.
