Wolf: The Complete Songs Vol 2: Mörike Lieder Part 2 – review

Four fab soloists complete a knockout live recording of Wolf's Mörike Lieder, writes Fiona Maddocks

Recorded live at the Oxford Lieder festival 2010, this disc – concentrate – is the second in the first complete edition of the songs of Hugo Wolf (1860-1903) and the second part of the Mörike Lieder. Hard to simplify that information but it's a series which continues at this year's festival. The four excellent singers – Sophie Daneman, Anna Grevelius, James Gilchrist and Stephan Loges – with only one German among them, show a vivid understanding of the texts (translated in helpful CD notes by Richard Stokes). Sholto Kynoch steers the performances with secure, expressive playing, especially in dark moods – "Der Jäger" (Gilchrist) – or in the sardonic wit of the last song, "Abschied" (Loges).
