MIke Gibbs/Norma Winstone: Here’s a Song For You – review

Two jazz masters put their own delightful spin on everyone from Sting to Fats Waller, writes Dave Gelly

Mike Gibbs is among the finest living masters of the jazz orchestra, and Norma Winstone the singer who has inspired a whole generation of European jazz vocalists. Given a free hand with Germany's NDR Big Band, they have come up with a truly gorgeous album. The orchestrations are constantly surprising but always apt, the choice of songs - from Joni Mitchell to Fats Waller, Cole Porter to Sting - immaculate, and the playing polished beyond belief. As for Ms Winstone, who else could make complexity sound so simple?
