Opossom: Electric Hawaii – review

Former Mint Chicks frontman Kody Nielson turns in a breezy, psychedelic album for late summer, says Phil Mongredien

Once frontman of combustible New Zealand noise-pop outfit the Mint Chicks, Kody Nielson has embarked on a solo career as Opossom. The result is upbeat psychedelia that references the Beach Boys and Flaming Lips without ever sounding derivative. It's charming, the distilled sunshine of Blue Meanies ideally timed to coincide with Britain's late-blooming summer. At the other end of his palette, meanwhile, is the beautiful Inhaler Song, which sounds like Mercury Rev at their most desolate. There are a few too many lightweight moments – Fly, Outer Space – for Electric Hawaii to be essential, but its 30 minutes certainly don't drag.
