Various Artists: Isles of Wonder – Music for the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games – review

Relive the key moments of Danny Boyle's acclaimed Olympic ceremony with this compilation, writes Killian Fox

Since Thomas Heatherwick's Olympic cauldron raised its flaming spindles to the sky on 27 July, sales of songs used in Danny Boyle's opening ceremony have shot up by 185%. This compilation, made available immediately after the event, rocketed to No 1 in the iTunes chart in four countries. It features some of the key moments in the soundtrack – Jerusalem, Tubular Bells, Dizzee Rascal's Bonkers – but not much, understandably, from the whistlestop tour of British music midway through (no Stones, no Jam). Instead, on disc two, we get a long and slightly featureless mix by musical directors Underworld. If you want to relive the high points, stick to disc one.
