Oscar Brown Jr and Maggie Brown: We’re Live – review

Dave Gelly: This outstanding live set shows why Oscar Brown Jr was one of the hippest jazz singers of the 60s

The jazz world seems to have forgotten the late Oscar Brown Jr, mainly because jazz didn't take up the whole of a life increasingly devoted to civil rights campaigning. But in the 1960s his singing amounted to a definition of hip. His lyrics added to well-known jazz tunes were so apt that they became permanently attached. This live set with his daughter, recorded in 2001, is certainly stylish. Style, though, is only the finishing touch applied to two outstanding musical talents. What other singers would tackle the two simultaneous lines in Charlie Parker's Bird Chase?
