The Buck Clayton Legacy Band: Claytonia – review

This exhilarating memorial to the late trumpeter Buck Clayton is a fitting tribute, writes Dave Gelly

The great swing trumpeter Buck Clayton, who died in 1991, left a box of his compositions to Alyn Shipton, the man who had published his autobiography. He hoped they might help keep his memory alive. It took 20 years to happen, but this nine-piece band is the result. Co-led by Shipton on bass and German saxophonist Matthias Seuffert, and with the remarkable Dutch trumpeter Menno Daams playing Buck's part, it's a kind of living, pop-up memorial, playing concerts and festivals around Britain and Europe. This set, recorded live at the Sage Gateshead, catches the exhilarating sound to perfection.
