Humphrey Lyttelton and his Band: Live at the Nottingham Jazz Festival 1972 – review

Humph the master bandleader is on fabulous form – and a mere 51 years old – on this terrific live recording, writes Dave Gelly

It probably needs pointing out by now that before becoming a national treasure in his old age, Humph had already spent half a century as a renowned jazz musician. Apart from his masterly trumpet playing he was a hugely prolific composer and a bandleader of near genius. This two-CD concert recording, featuring one of the very best bands in his long career, was made when he was a mere youth of 51. For a quirky, humorous man he could produce moments of great tenderness in his playing, as he does here in a lovely version of Crazy She Calls Me.
