Aci, Galatea e Polifemo – review

A crack team delivers some staggering Handel arias, writes Nicholas Kenyon

Acis and Galatea (1718), Handel's famous pastoral mini-opera, has overshadowed this serenata written in Naples in 1708 on the same subject. It's maybe not as perfectly balanced and varied, but it has a succession of quite wonderful arias which Fabio Bonizzoni and his crack team (who have now recorded all Handel's Italian cantatas) realise with edgy eloquence. The range of Polifemo's arias is staggering: Lisandro Abadie cannot quite match the ups and downs of Christopher Purves on his recent recital disc, but his passion is touching, as is the poise of Roberta Invernizzi's ice-cold grief in the show-stopping Verso già l'alma.
