Brahms: Ein Deutsches Requiem – review

Conductor Marin Alsop gives Brahms's German Requiem a momentum that's intelligent without ever feeling hurried, writes Stephen Pritchard

Anyone who enjoyed Marin Alsop's period-instrument reading of the Brahms German Requiem with the Choir and Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment at the Proms this season might also enjoy this performance with altogether larger forces. The Leipzig sound lacks the edge of the OAE but the choir is no less nimble, thanks to Alsop's ability to give the music a momentum that is intelligent without ever feeling hurried. Anna Lucia Richter's superb, bell-like soprano is perfect for this piece but baritone Stephan Genz fares less well, his excessive vibrato pulling the line out of shape.
