The Swedish mezzo Anne Sofie von Otter has always been adventurous musically, criss-crossing between the mainstream and experimental, collaborating with the likes of Bruce Mehldau and Elvis Costello. But French song has had a special place in her repertoire. This double disc of chansons and melodies, full of delicious variety, ranges from Hahn, Ravel and Saint-Saëns to Ferré, Charles Trenet, Lemarque, Moustaki and Barbara. Von Otter's voice has a greater mellowness, and just the right hint of huskiness, to conjure the salon atmosphere – think of Proust – of so many of these intimate songs. A mixed ensemble, including accordion and guitar, contributes to the Gallic mood.
