Couperin, Rebel: Les Nations, Les Caractères de la danse – review

Florilegium give a stylish account of works by two masters of the French baroque, writes Nicholas Kenyon

Jean-Féry Rebel is one of the most fascinating of French baroque composers, whose suite Les elements includes a pioneering scrunchy 12-note chord. No such atonal dissonance in his more polite Les Caractères de la danse, a popular dance suite alluding to the favourites of the time which prompted a whole series of parody verses reproduced here. The music is light compared with the richness of Couperin's elaborate suites from Les Nations, depicting the French and Spanish tastes in a sequence of dance movements each including a fine, noble Passacaille. Stylish playing from the Florilegium chamber ensemble, with two particularly well-balanced flutes.
