It’s Album Time review – Todd Terje’s ‘rich mix’

Norwegian DJ Todd Terje shares his gift for melody and genre-splicing on this impressive debut, writes Molloy Woodcraft

Terje Olsen's debut LP is a rich mix indeed. The Norwegian DJ has a knack for melody and modulation and a penchant for cheesy synths, big arpeggios and Giorgio Moroder basslines. He also has a gift for genre-splicing – opener proper Leisure Suit Preben morphs from a loungecore French film score into a Daft Punk-esque disco number, while the misleadingly titled Svensk Saas is tropicalia with scat-singing through a vocoder. He's also a master of rhythm, with Alfonso Muskedunder in a nippy 7/8 time and Swing Star Part II evoking Grace Jones's greatest hit. Later, Bryan Ferry gives it the full smoky quaver on a Vangelis-esque cover of Robert Palmer's Johnny and Mary, and there's plenty more in the mix than four-to-the-floor house. In short, if you fell out of love with dance music at the end of the 1990s, this may be the record to get you back in front of the big speakers.
