At 29, Neset is the coming man of Scandinavian jazz. A phenomenal saxophonist, he has been compared to both the late American hero Michael Brecker and his fellow Norwegian Jan Garbarek. There is plenty of his provocative playing here, but the emphasis is on his composition for a remarkable orchestra. It's hard to believe that this immense palette of sound, from the softest breeze to a wild tempest, resides in so few instruments. Although the playing itself is formidably precise, the total effect is of 13 lively individual voices, each making a distinctive and vital contribution.
