Hoagy review – Chris Ingham and co capture the spirit of a 20th-century giant

Hoagy Carmichael's classic tunes are brought to uncanny life, writes Dave Gelly

Singer-songwriter Hoagy Carmichael was a constant presence in mid-20th-century popular music. Wry and folksy, with a curious dreamlike flavour, his songs betray his origins in the jazz world of the 20s and 30s. This collection of 16 numbers, played and sung by British pianist Chris Ingham, catches their spirit exactly. On pieces such as Skylark, Stardust and Georgia on My Mind, the trumpet of Paul Higgs conjures the ghost of Bix Beiderbecke with spooky precision. The album's been out for a while but don't miss it. Complete with artfully vintage-looking cover, it's a delightful package.
