Jungle review – self-titled slice of accomplished search-engine-unfriendly disco-funk

Nothing to do with the genre of the same name, this west London specialise in smooth disco-funk, writes Kitty Empire

Naming their outfit after an entirely unrelated genre was never going to optimise Jungle's search engine results. But this tactic fits with the electronic duo's initial reluctance to reveal themselves. Now we know they're two white guys from west London and that their debut album is as classy and accomplished a dose of aerated disco-funk as their early releases (Platoon, Busy Earnin') suggested. It all runs very smoothly – perhaps too smoothly for some tastes – but listen past the sheen and the headphone goods are there. Tracks such as Drops feature unexpectedly creaking doors and Smoking Pixels is a noir bagatelle, whistled in.
