Bosco Rogers
The Middle (Bleepmachine)
Bosco Rogers have been described as “flower punk ruffians” who met when “drunken conversation was struck up over a pool table”, but don’t hold it against them. The Middle is actually a glorious two-minute slice of 60s-influenced surf-rock, angled towards the drive to Venice Beach in a soft top, RayBans on. Obviously it’s currently the middle of winter, so I guess just borrow your flatmate’s SAD lightbox, take a valium, run a warm bath, and pretend?

Peter Andre
Christmas Time’s For Family (Andre Music)
Musician tie-ins with supermarkets haven’t exactly had great success. Who could forget Nadine Coyle’s solo album (everyone), which sold 500 copies in its first week in an exclusive deal with Tesco? Andre’s released this with Iceland. It ticks all the Phil Spector boxes for a good Christmas song: bells, brass section, “dancing around the Christmas tree” lyric – even though nobody has ever done that. But it’s not a patch on my favourite Christmas track, A Christmas Duel, courtesy of Cyndi Lauper and the Hives (opening line: “I bought no gifts this year and I slept with your sister”). Next to them, Andre’s is about as original as a book token from the uncle you never see.
Chvrches
Get Away (Virgin/Goodbye)
Recorded especially for Zane Lowe’s re-score of the Drive soundtrack, Get Away hits the accelerator hard, fuelled by 80s synths and lashings of reverb. But don’t let its sweet-but-sad vocals fool you: the underlying message is pretty creepy – “Never let you get away” being a lyrical case in point. Car doors are locked from the inside. Luckily, they’ve dressed up this Fatal Attraction approach to romance in a massive dance-pop banger, so the masses of Clapham young professionals in their ironic reindeer antlers will dance away, unperturbed.
Professor Green Feat Mr Probz
Little Secrets (Virgin)
Song about discovering incriminating stuff about significant others. Who knew that Prof Green’s wife, Made In Chelsea’s Millie Mackintosh, was one for sticking bogeys under the bedside table and drinking straight from the carton? Unfortunately, none of this is revealed in Little Secrets. It’s just a standard pop singalong for the cuckolded. Still the best British celeb couple, though, with Jamie Cullum and Sophie Dahl a close second.
Tennis
I’m Callin’ (Communion/Island)
Tennis are lost in a sea of semi-successful, perfectly lovely boy-girl duos, including Slow Club, Summer Camp and New Look, while their peers Beach House pick up great reviews, film trailer syncs and sell-out tours. But whoever makes the next 500 Days Of Summer should have a listen here: I’m Callin’ is a gorgeous song with a splashy drum intro and a bridge so stylishly assembled that the Golden Gate is throwing envious looks.
