Kacey Musgraves: Pageant Material review – country princess files down her spikes

The talented singer is back with melodies that still stick, but this follow-up to Same Trailer Different Park is a disappointment

Kacey Musgraves was drowning in wholly justified plaudits after the release of Same Trailer, Different Park, her major-label debut, in 2013. She won the best country album Grammy for a record that was full of empathetic but sharp-tongued portrayals of poverty and small-town life in middle America. What a disappointment its follow-up turns out to be, then. Though her songwriting partners – Nashville A-listers Luke Laird and Shane McAnally – are on board again, the acuity is lessened. Instead, on Dime Store Cowgirl, Musgraves offers the familiar story of a woman who’s had her “picture made with Willie Nelson / Stayed in a hotel with a pool” but who, nevertheless, remains “just a dime store cowgirl / You can take me out of the country / But you can’t take the country out of me.” The melodies still stick, but it feels as if Musgraves has filed down her spikes in order to consolidate her position as country music’s princess. “You can’t be everybody’s cup of tea,” she sings on Cup of Tea. “Some like the bitter, some the sweet.” This time, you’re getting the sweet.
