Fasch: Overture Symphonies CD review – pleasingly elegant

Fasch’s groundbreaking three-movement symphonies are well worth a listen – though maybe not all at once

Johann Friedrich Fasch (1688-1758) made the overture symphony his own, melding the French-style overture with the Italian sinfonia, producing three-movement symphonies for his Dresden audience that quest beyond his contemporaries into a new, richly orchestrated and structurally daring territory, nosing towards classical style. Ludger Rémy presents five examples of this unusual genre, three recorded here for the first time. Pleasingly elegant playing makes this an enjoyable disc, though listening to five in a row (overture, andante, allegro; overture, andante, allegro) might test your composure a tad.
