Miss Black America: God Bless Miss Black America

Bury St Edmunds's finest already have a reputation as shouty punk rockers, but their debut suggests there is more in their locker. With ace guitarist Gish shimmering for England and vocalist Seymour Glass perfecting a balance between angst and anger, much of God Bless sounds like the more mature Manic Street Preachers playing U2's Boy. Pocket manifestos such as Infinite Chinese Box rage convincingly; however, their more restrained moments are most interesting. Roadkill sees Glass unveiling what may be the world's first angry croon. Better still is Car Crash for the Soul, which packs a dissection of western capitalism ("Shopping is like sex in pornos, urgent and joyless") into three rollercoasting minutes.
