The bleak, late-night confessionals of His Name Is Alive's last album, Some Day My Blues Will Cover the Earth, fell between the same cracks as lost contemporary soul classics like Soul Family Sensation's I Don't Even Know If I Should Call You Baby and David McAlmont's A Little Communication.
Last Night is an attempt by gentle Michigan eccentric Warn Defever and vocalist Lovetta Pippin to create something warmer and more upbeat, but while it is lusher than its predecessor, the music is vivid as a bruise. Someday My Prince Will Come is a Sly Stone-ish sax jam that develops over 11 minutes into a buzz of vocal riffs, and there is real pain behind the languid eddy of Maybe. His Name Is Alive have brought the funk while remaining mindful of their art, and Last Night is gorgeous.
