Oi Va Voi, Oi Va Voi

From space songs to klezmer: no wonder KT Tunstall left the band.

It all went wrong for Oi Va Voi after their near-breakthrough 2003 album Laughter Through Tears. For one thing, they lost sometime vocalist KT Tunstall and took an age to find a replacement - the ethereal Alice McLaughlin. Whether their genre-busting music is still a bit confusing for mainstream audiences remains to be seen, but they excel here at everything from an Air-style 'kitsch space song' about Yuri Gagarin via skittering beats, Arabic strings and Jewish klezmer to the sensitive 'Dry Your Eyes'. Progress may depend on how convincingly they serve up this mix live.
