Bollywood and Bhangra have long been borrowed by hip-hop and R'n'B - from Eric B and Rakim's 1987 Hindi sampling, Paid in Full, to Timbaland's ongoing tabla-dabbling, and contemporary crooner Christina Milian's Indian-inflected Dip It Low.

It's fitting then that Asian artists are finally infiltrating the urban soundscape with their own blend of "desi" drum patterns set to R'n'B rhythms. At the forefront of the UK Asian invasion is Britney remixer/Misteeq producer Rishi Rich and his poster-boy protege, rapper/singer Jay Sean. Last year, under the guise of the Rishi Rich Project, the pair, and Punjabi vocalist Juggi D, reached No 12 with the foot-tappingly fantastic Dance With You (Nachna Tere Naal).

Now the spotlight is shining solely on Sean, whose contagious Eyes On You looks set to chart high this weekend. The 22-year-old former medical student has been inevitably, if not a little inaccurately, tagged the "Asian Craig David". But while both blend song with the spoken word, and are partial to impromptu beat-boxing, Sean has a little way to go before he can match David's polish.

Granted, it may not have been the best night to put on a show - the evening belongs to Sven and his men - but Sean is unable to truly fire up his followers. Possibly it's the fault of the half-empty venue, the beer-weary football fans or, given that he's a new artist, perhaps it's because the audience may be unfamiliar with his music. Mostly though, despite his dazzling good looks, it's Sean's somewhat understated stage-presence that fails to engage.

That's not to say that he doesn't have great potential. Imaginative songs such as Me Against Myself, which sees Sean the rapper battle against Sean the singer, are a refreshing break from the norm. Elsewhere, Stevie Wonder instrumentals mingle well with the live Indian-flute and palpable Punjabi-punctuations of "hype man" Juggi D. Indeed, once Sean relaxes into his role of main attraction, he should shape up into one of the UK's more inventive live pop acts.
