Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival
Huddersfield

When he became the artistic director of Britain's most important new-music festival last year, Graham Mackenzie made it known that he wanted to make Huddersfield more musically inclusive, and to broaden its definition of contemporary music. Diversity, he said, was the key word. It would be an exaggeration to say that the mainstream of contemporary music had been marginalised - there are appearances this year by top European groups such as Musikfabrik, the Nieuw Ensemble and the Arditti and Smith Quartets, and premieres from Rebecca Saunders, Louis Andriessen, Walter Zimmermann and Christian Wolff. But now much more of the programme is devoted to improvised works, interactive installations and electro acoustic projects, all of which blur musical boundaries as much as they redefine them. It may be the Huddersfield festival, but not as many of us have known it.
