Wolf: The Complete Songs Vol 1: Mörike Lieder Part 1 – review

Fiona Maddocks recommends this expert recording of Wolf's Mörike Lieder

By all accounts the Austrian composer Hugo Wolf (1860-1903) had what would now be called a problem personality: he fell out with everyone and was even sacked as a music critic for being too irascible (yes). He found his own expressive voice in a body of songs of extraordinary variety and expressive power. This is the first release from the well-established Oxford Lieder festival, recorded in the city's Holywell Music Room last year. Daneman, Grevelius, Gilchrist and Loges are top-flight lieder singers, with Oxford Lieder founder and pianist Sholto Kynoch offering sensitive support. Richard Stokes provides excellent notes and translations.
