As music programmes go, Later can be incorrigibly naff (painted piano keys on the studio floor, booge-woogie jams featuring Leonard Cohen etc). Still, this latest collection of performances is a reminder of the show's range and status: 32 songs by mega-stars as diverse as Paul McCartney, Blondie and Tony Bennett.
It's called Giants because the featured artists have either shifted an enormous number or records or been taken very seriously by music journalists over the years.
Depressingly, the most sterling performances are by the recently deceased (a rumbling Johnny Cash, a snarling Joe Strummer), while Lou Reed and Jeff Beck just do convincing impressions of being dead.
Not the most incendiary rock'n'roll show on earth, but then, fans of Later ... will hardly be expecting one.
