Panjabi MC: The Album

Panjabi MC

Panjabi MC has already provided one of the most refreshing hits of the year with January's Mundian To Bach Ke, which fused bhangra, breakbeats and an expertly weaved snatch of the theme from Knight Rider.

However, MC - aka Rajinder Rai - has been big on the bhangra scene for years and, with almost indecent haste, this album pilfers his back catalogue. Whether it will reach a mass audience is debatable.

The Album contains some wonderful music, as Rai delves into Indian classical music and dazzles throughout with his bhuna beats.

However, culled from three albums - 100% Proof, Grass Roots and Legalised - released over a decade, it doesn't quite hang together as a collection. In fact, the gulf between his early takes on gangsta rap and the sublime, female-sung Sweeter is greater than that between a McDonald's and an aromatic jalfrezi.

Despite its many pleasures, this is probably still too bhangra-oriented for the crossover market.
