Threesome

One of the great things about having your own record label is that you can do what you want. And one of the bad things is that there is no one to tell you when you've not got it quite right.

It has been nearly 20 years now since Michelle Shocked emerged with her Texas Campfire Tapes, and she has remained one of the more charmingly maverick all-American singer-songwriters. She can tackle anything from rock to late-night jazz, and here she does all that at once by releasing three albums, with 31 new tracks, in one package.

Don't Ask, Don't Tell chronicles her divorce with mostly witty and upbeat songs that veer from R&B to country-rock and country; Mexican Standoff mixes blues with south-of-the-border ballads; Got No Strings brings western swing treatment to Disney standards such as To Be a Cat. Shocked is in very fine voice and her range is spectacular, but she has dashed through all this a little too quickly. A shorter set with more thoughtful songs, such as Evacuation Route and Elaborate Sabotage, could have had more impact.
