Stravinsky: The Firebird; Symphony of Psalms

Andris Nelsons impresses as new head of the CBSO with this lean and hungry Firebird, writes Nicholas Kenyon

It's clear the Birmingham orchestra chose its successor to Sakari Oramo and Simon Rattle very shrewdly: the young Latvian Andris Nelsons has made an immediate impact and this Stravinsky disc establishes his musical profile very strongly. This is not a sumptuous Firebird – indeed it is quite lean and hungry – but it is very sharply characterised and full of exotic sounds, beautifully captured and rising to a thrilling Infernal Dance and final climax. The surprising coupling with Symphony of Psalms brings a neo-classical coolness to the mixture, with a more recessed balance, but hypnotically sustained choral singing in the ethereal Laudate Dominum.
