Celtic Connections

City Halls, Glasgow

Periodically, it must seem an irresistible idea to bring together Scotland's folk and classical music traditions. Some kind of dialogue is then attempted, before both parties hurry off in their separate directions with sighs of relief.

This latest effort, under the auspices of the Celtic Connections festival, saw the BBCSSO and conductor Douglas Boyd sharing the stage of Glasgow's City Hall with traditional musicians. It was something of a Scottish musical smorgasbord, with performances from young Gaelic singer James Graham and an exhilarating set of reels from pan-Celtic group Daimh. The classical side was represented by Eddie McGuire's symphonic portrait of the warrior Calgacus, and Peter Maxwell Davies's classic musical postcard An Orkney Wedding with Sunrise; the latter given a rather po-faced performance that failed to do justice to its riotous good humour.

Interaction between the two parties, however, was limited. Shetland fiddler Chris Stout attempted something more meaningful with his new work Dynröst, though even here the orchestra was mostly confined to the background whenever the traditional instruments were playing, despite an interesting passage where Stout's fiddle was shadowed by a muted solo trumpet.

· Festival runs city-wide until February 4. www.celticconnections.com
