With their side-swept fringes, rollneck sweaters and faraway eyes, Scandinavians Acid House Kings look like a quartet of Val Doonicans - even their female singer resembles the sweater-clad crooner. From the way they pose on the album cover, it's clear that their hearts rest firmly in the perfect pop days when the lilting harmonies of the Beach Boys sat snugly next to the jolly tunes of Burt Bacharach, and the ideal song was exactly three minutes long.
Sing Along With ... follows in the twee footsteps of early Belle and Sebastian: the album is packed with fey harmonies and soothing melodies that are most effective when spearheaded by the coy voice of Julia Lannerhiem, whose delivery charmingly veers between heartbroken and just plain bored. The dreamy air of I Write Summer Songs for No Reason, the knowing but innocent lyrics ("They say your middle name is trouble/but I know it's Caroline" on This Heart Is a Stone) and Do What You Wanna Do's incessant handclaps ensure that the album lingers on the schmindier side of indie. Still, it's a valiant attempt to transform hazy sunshine and fading memories into graceful song.
